When an air cooler blows warm air, the pump is the first suspect. Most “dead” pumps are not dead at all — they are blocked, starved of water or not getting power. As a cooler pump manufacturer, these are the causes we see most, in the order you should check them.

Safety first: switch off and unplug the cooler before you touch the pump or the water. Never run a pump out of water to “test” it.

Quick diagnosis

What you notice Most likely cause Go to
Pump silent, no vibration No power reaching it 1, 6
Pump hums, no water comes out Blocked impeller or intake, or air lock 3, 4
Water comes out but pads stay dry at the top Low head, kinked hose, blocked distributor 5
Pump runs for a while, then stops Overheating / dry running 2, 7

1. No power reaching the pump

Check the socket and the cooler’s main switch first. Then check the pump selector on the cooler: most coolers have a separate pump position, and many will run the fan with the pump off. If the switch is set right and the pump is still silent, the switch itself or the wiring to it may be faulty — a job for an electrician. (How cooler switches work: see our 3-speed cooler switch guide.)

2. Water level too low

A submersible pump must sit fully under water. If the level drops below the intake, it sucks air and stops pushing water. Top up the tank to the marked level. If your cooler has a float valve for a direct water line, check that it isn’t stuck.

3. Blocked intake or impeller

This is the most common cause. Dust, pad fibres, algae and hard-water scale collect around the intake grille and the small impeller behind it. The pump hums but moves little or no water.

Fix: unplug, lift the pump out, and clean the intake grille. Remove the impeller cover if your model allows it and rinse the impeller. For white scale, soak the plastic parts in a mild vinegar-and-water mix, then rinse. Refit and test.

4. Air lock

After a refill or cleaning, air can get trapped in the pump. Hold the pump fully under water and tilt it gently until bubbles stop, then refit.

5. Kinked, loose or blocked hose and distributor

If water leaves the pump but the pads stay dry, follow the path. Look for a kinked or cracked hose and a loose joint at the nozzle. A threaded nozzle holds better than a push-fit one. Then clear the holes in the water distribution channel; scale blocks them fast in hard-water areas.

If everything is clear and water still won’t reach the top, the pump may simply not have enough lifting height for that cooler. Our 15W vs 20W vs 40W guide explains how to match head to cooler height.

6. Low or unstable voltage

During peak summer evenings, voltage can sag below what some pumps need to start. If the pump works in the morning but not at night, voltage is a likely cause. Pumps rated for a wide range, such as 110–240V, handle this better.

7. Burnt winding from dry running

If the pump ran without water for hours, its winding may have overheated and failed. A pump with thermal overload protection (T.O.P.) shuts itself off before this happens and restarts after cooling. Without it, the pump usually needs replacing.

When to replace the pump

Replace it if it gets power but stays silent, if the body is cracked and leaking, or if it smells burnt. Match the new pump’s head, nozzle and footprint to the old one.

How to make a pump last longer

  • Clean the tank and pump intake every two weeks in peak season.
  • Never let the tank run dry; choose a pump with T.O.P. if refills are irregular.
  • At season end, take the pump out, clean it, dry it and store it indoors.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my cooler pump humming but not pumping water?

Usually a blocked impeller or intake, or an air lock. Clean the intake and impeller, then submerge and tilt the pump to release air.

Can a cooler pump be repaired?

Cleaning fixes most problems. A burnt winding in a sealed pump usually can’t be repaired economically — replace it.

How long does a cooler pump last?

With regular cleaning and no dry running, a good pump lasts several seasons.
