The right blade size is set by the cooler, not by preference. Fit a blade that’s too big and it hits the cabinet or overloads the motor. Fit one too small and the cooler loses air throw. Here’s how to get it right in five minutes.

How to measure a cooler fan blade

  1. Measure straight across the blade from the tip of one leaf to the tip of the opposite leaf. On a blade with an odd number of leaves, measure the circle the tips sweep.
  2. Note the leaf count.
  3. Check the hub: the shaft diameter and the motor model it sits on.
  4. Note which way the blade turns when the cooler runs.

With those four facts, you can match a replacement exactly.

Which size for which cooler

16 inch Room coolers, tower coolers The most common room-cooler size
17 inch Climatizer-style coolers Specific cabinet designs
18 inch Large room and desert coolers Most popular desert-cooler size
19 inch Climatizer-style coolers Specific cabinet designs

16 inch vs 18 inch: the most common question

An 18-inch blade generally moves more air than a 16-inch blade — but only if the cabinet opening and motor are built for it. Never fit an 18-inch blade into a 16-inch cooler. It will foul the cabinet or overload the motor.

And size is not everything. A well-designed 16-inch blade with the right pitch can outperform a poor 18-inch one. That’s why leaf count and pitch matter as much as diameter (see our fan blade buyer’s guide).

What decides an 18 inch cooler blade’s price?

Price lists online vary a lot, and the cheapest blade is rarely the cheapest over a season. Five things drive the price:

  1. Material — virgin high-grade ABS costs more than recycled plastic, and holds shape far better in summer heat.
  2. Weight and wall thickness — a heavier, thicker leaf resists flexing and cracking.
  3. Design — leaf count, pitch and profile (Pro, Ultra, Exhaust) change the mould and the material used.
  4. Balance and finish — blades checked for balance cost more to make and save motors.
  5. Order volume and packing — bulk orders and boxed packing bring the unit price down.

Frequently asked questions

Which blade is best for an air cooler?

The one built for your cabinet size and motor. For most desert coolers that’s an 18-inch blade; for most room coolers, 16 inch.

Can I put an 18 inch blade in a 16 inch cooler?

No. It will hit the cabinet or overload the motor. Always match the original size.

How do I know my cooler blade size?

Measure tip to tip across the blade, or check the size moulded on the hub.

Does a bigger blade cool more?

It moves more air if the motor and cabinet are built for it. Cooling also depends on wet pads and a working pump.
