The pump is the smallest part of an air cooler and the one that decides whether it actually cools. If water does not reach the top of the pads evenly, the fan just blows warm air. For a cooler brand, that means returns. For a dealer, it means a customer who doesn’t come back.

So choosing an air cooler pump manufacturer is not a price-per-piece decision alone. Here is what we tell every brand and distributor who asks us how to compare suppliers — from a team that has been making cooler components in Bawana, Delhi since 1998.

1. Ask for flow and lifting height, not just wattage

Most listings stop at “18W” or “40W”. Wattage tells you how much power the pump draws, not how much water it moves. The two numbers that matter are flow (in litres per minute, LPM) and maximum lifting height (head, in metres).

For example, our Evo 20W delivers 8 LPM at up to 1.85 m of head. Our Sobo 40W delivers 12 LPM at up to 2.5 m. A tall tower cooler needs the head; a wide desert cooler with three pad sides needs the flow. A supplier who can’t give you both numbers for every model is guessing.

2. Check the motor type

Modern cooler pumps use a magnet-driven (synchronous) motor sealed inside the body. There are no carbon brushes to wear out and no shaft seal for water to creep past. Ask how the winding is sealed and what the body is moulded from — a high-grade thermoplastic body holds its shape through a full summer of warm water.

3. Ask about thermal overload protection (T.O.P.)

The most common way a cooler pump dies is running dry: the tank empties overnight and the pump keeps going. Thermal overload protection cuts power when the winding overheats and resets once it cools. On our 40W Sobo it is standard; on models like the Evo 20W it is available as an option. If you sell into regions with irregular water top-ups, specify it.

4. Confirm voltage range

Indian supply swings, especially in summer peak hours and in rural areas. A pump rated for a wide input range — ours run on 110–240V — keeps working through voltage dips that stall narrower designs. This directly cuts warranty claims.

5. Check physical fit before the order, not after

Cabinet layouts differ between brands. Ask for exact dimensions and the nozzle type. The Evo 20W measures 81×75×92 mm and the Sobo 40W 82×77×89 mm, both with a threaded nozzle for a leak-free hose fit and brackets that drop into standard cabinets. Get a sample, fit it in your own cabinet, and run it for a week.

6. Look at certification and in-house production

ISI marking means the product has been tested against Indian standards. Just as important: is the pump made in the supplier’s own unit, or bought in and re-labelled? In-house manufacturing means the same specification batch after batch, and someone who can actually fix a problem at the source. Our pumps are ISI approved and built in our own Bawana units.

7. Test the supplier on peak-season capacity

The cooler business is compressed into a few months. A supplier who is fine in November can let you down in March. Ask how much they produce per month, how far ahead you need to book, and whether they hold stock for repeat buyers. Our season sourcing calendar lays out when to place each order.
